We are seeking a skilled and experienced Monitoring and Observability Lead to join our Technology Services Department within our Winnipeg Head Office located at 140 Otter Street.

As Monitoring and Observability Lead, you will be at the forefront of planning, designing, and maintaining Pollard Banknote’s monitoring and observability platform to ensure reliability, peak performance and limitless scalability of our infrastructure and applications. Using the latest technology, you will be ahead of the curve in identifying and resolving issues, optimizing system performance and cost while driving continuous improvement efforts.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead the development and management of our monitoring strategies using Grafana and other AWS monitoring tools such as CloudWatch and X-Ray.
  • Design and implement effective dashboards and alerts to ensure proactive identification of issues before they impact business operations.
  • Own the setup, administration, ongoing support, and health of the Monitoring and Observability platform.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to integrate monitoring tools into the application lifecycle, ensuring high availability and performance.
  • Leading technical discussions and requirements analysis with partners and customers to drive alignment with customer needs.
  • Collect, aggregate, and visualize the collected metrics to support users with actionable insight.
  • Manage the Monitoring & Observability platform budget, including cloud costs and tool subscriptions.
  • Strategize resource allocation for Monitoring & Observability projects to ensure efficiency.
  • Conduct regular system audits to check the integrity and scalability of the Monitoring & Observability infrastructure.
  • Plan and implement incident response strategy for efficient alert handling and issue resolution via the Monitoring & Observability platform.
  • Adhere to compliance regulations and aligning the Monitoring & Observability platform with those requirements.
  • Establish on-call rotations and escalation procedures for critical incidents with the Monitoring & Observability platform.
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers.

What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience in designing, automating, maintaining, and optimizing observability platforms (logging, metric, and tracing)
  • Proven experience in a monitoring lead role within AWS cloud environments.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience using Grafana Cloud and AWS CloudWatch.
  • Strong understanding of cloud architecture, especially AWS services.
  • Knowledge and experience of containers and Kubernetes cluster
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Open Telemetry or Grafana agents.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python or PowerShell for automation tasks.
  • Experience with additional monitoring tools like Prometheus, ELK Stack, or similar are nice to have.
