Under the general direction of the Manager, Enterprise Information Systems Department, this role is responsible for leading and coordinating the solution design and architecture practice for IT application solutions. This includes establishing, managing, and refining solution architecture practices, Dev/Ops practices, and application portfolio technology plans. The role involves close collaboration with D&T business partners, enterprise and solution architects, project leaders, system developers, integration platform experts, and various client areas to understand current and future business capability needs.
Key to success in this role is providing leadership and supervision to a team of solution architects and other IT professionals. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively in teams, possess excellent communication skills, have strong business relationship acumen, be well organized, technology-savvy, quick to learn, and familiar with modern solution architecture patterns and best practices. Systems thinking is a key characteristic.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of Application Solution Architects and various IT professionals, providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities, ensuring a high level of team performance and accountability.
- Lead and coordinate the development, maturation, and delivery of the Solution Design and Architecture practice. This includes establishing principles, standards, guidelines, processes, and artifacts in collaboration with Enterprise Architecture and the Digital Platforms team, and alignment to EA standards and best practices.
- Coordinate the use of modern solution architecture tools and methods to document, model, and analyze processes, user-system interaction, data flows, application components, and underlying technologies.
- Participate in the system study phase including the project proposal, the definition of user requirements, development of alternatives, technical evaluation, cost benefit analysis of alternatives, and present recommendations.
- Collaborate closely with the applicable IT advisor(s) to ensure alignment on advancing Azure Dev/Ops practices and developing Testing and Quality Assurance practices and to operationalize across the department.
- Create and manage plans to modernize, rationalize, and standardize the IT application portfolio, measuring value through analysis and tracking of business, technology, and data impacts.
- Coordinate with the department leadership team, together with the Digital & Technology (D&T) Product Management & Delivery Enablement, Value Management Office, and Project Delivery Departments to plan and schedule resources for complex, enterprise-wide project delivery.
- Prepare section business plans, budgets, workload, and resource projections.
- Recommend the selection and training of the section team staff, plan for and provide on-going staff development, and conduct staff performance evaluations to ensure performance meets established standards.
- May act as Project Leader, lead a working group, and/or participate in various architecture and technology projects, upgrades, or initiatives.
- Keep abreast of IT technology trends and developments, communicating accordingly to management and staff; including keeping up to date in the areas of system/solution architecture and development patterns and best practices.
Qualifications:
- A four-year degree in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or related discipline from a recognized university with six-years experience related to solution architecture, design, and computer system analysis including two-years leadership and supervisory experience;
- OR
- A two-year diploma in Computer Programming Technology from a recognized college and eight-years experience related to solution architecture, design, and computer system analysis including two-years leadership and supervisory experience.
- Experience leading technology focused teams, including strategy development in a complex, matrixed organization, preferably in the Power and Utilities sector.
- Ability to lead a team effectively, including task delegation, mentorship, and line-of-sight alignment between assigned work and business unit objectives.
- Ability to influence and motivate others and initiate action.
- Hands-on experience as a Solution Architect with a proven track record in architecting solutions.
- Ability to understand, empathize and bridge multiple perspectives, including the ability to communicate business vision to technology teams and technology to business teams.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Strong understanding of business processes and the ability to translate business needs into technology solutions.
- Experience in leading, developing, and managing technology roadmaps that align and incorporate vendor vision with business needs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory duties and employee relations methods.
- Commitment towards ongoing learning related to information and cloud technologies.
- Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $51.23-$70.19 Hourly, $98,171.06-$134,498.00 Annually.
