Reporting to the Enterprise Data Office Manager, the Geospatial Data Architect is a technical leader with a deep technical understanding of geospatial data, geospatial technologies including Esri and GE Smallworld, data architecture, enterprise architecture, and business processes. This role works to conceptualize and assemble data solution architecture designs to ensure that solutions meet business needs and are compatible with existing architectures.
Key to success in this role will be creating data architectures to enable the storage, retrieval and analysis of geospatial data. You will design and develop efficient data models and structures to enable the integration of geospatial data into enterprise application systems and processes. You will work closely with other data architects, enterprise data governance, enterprise architecture, lines of business, and other technology subject matter experts to develop and implement strategies for managing, integrating and analyzing geospatial data. As a result, Manitoba Hydro will be able to make better decisions based on accurate, up-to-date geospatial information.
Responsibilities:
- Engage with lines of business to identify geospatial data needs and functional requirements with the purpose to design, build, and maintain enterprise-level geospatial data systems and architectures.
- Ensure seamless integration of geospatial data with other enterprise systems and databases to support comprehensive data analysis and decision-making.
- Research and evaluate new geospatial data technologies, tools, and methods to enhance functionality.
- Develop data models for geospatial data to support analytics, visualization, and data mining.
- Create and manage metadata for geospatial datasets to ensure data discoverability and usability.
- Provide training sessions and workshops to educate staff on the use of geospatial tools and data.
- Deliver the architectural design of technology solutions, utilizing knowledge of defined reference architectures, technology trends, and implementation experience to translate a business need into a solution blueprint that represents an end-to-end solution.
- Ensure the logical and physical architecture for a project aligns with the standards and reference architectures defined by the technical domain and enterprise architects; and is aligned with Corporate Strategies.
- Partner with Enterprise Architecture to continuously develop, improve, and maintain enterprise architecture, governance, and reference architectures.
- Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture to develop, maintain, and promote technology standards, technical capability guidelines, and guardrails.
- Be an advocate of data security and data governance principles and ensure appropriate security and governance practices are embedded in all our products and processes.
- Analyze the current solution portfolio to detect gaps/deficiencies and recommend improvements.
- Lead and facilitate research and assessment of emerging trends and advancements in technologies, tools, and best practices.
- Develop and evolve solution and data architecture principles, standards, and patterns to support decision-making.
Qualifications:
- A four year degree in computer science, geographic information systems, engineering, mathematics, or a related field from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of five years general IT experience, including three years of directly applicable Data & Analytics, architecture, and programming experience;
OR
- A two year diploma in Computer Programming Technology or geographic information systems from an institute of recognized standing with a minimum of seven years general IT experience, including three years of directly applicable Data & Analytics, architecture, and programming experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in designing data schemas/architecture that meet geographic data standards.
- Solid understanding of geospatial data management principles and best practices.
- Expert knowledge of GIS strategies, concepts, and technologies.
- Ability to document, model, and analyze complex business processes, people, data, and technology to formulate recommended architectures.
- Demonstrated ability to be the technical lead on multiple projects or activities with competing priorities.
- Experience with a variety of geospatial data formats and software programs including Esri and GE Smallworld and geospatial ETL processes including experience with FME and GIS/CAD interoperability.
- Experience in DevOps and Agile (Scrum/Kanban).
- Experience with bridging communication on complex requirements between technical and business-oriented audiences.
- Ability to work effectively with a broad network of stakeholders and teams.
- Sound knowledge on enterprise architecture and security principles.
- Strong problem-solving skills to identify and address data-related issues.
- Industry and vendor certifications preferred such as: Esri Enterprise Geodata Management Professional, Esri Enterprise System Design Professional, Esri Enterprise Administration Professional, or GISP. Other IT and GIS certifications are a plus.
- Demonstrated experience with leading, coaching, and mentoring team members.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $47.22-$65.19 Hourly, $90,484.68-$124,925.58 Annually.
